My mother and I went to Jonesborough's Progressive Dinner early in December 2004; it was the 4th or 5th. It was pricey. She treated me. I recollect it being about $75 a person. The deal with a Progressive Dinner is that a group of you travel to one house for an appetizer, then have soup at another home, your main course at the third home, and dessert at the last house. While I understood the concept and have my husband's childhood stories of doing the Progressive Dinner thing when he visited his parent's families in Ohio, I had not made the rounds on one before. While he made the rounds with his beloved family members, my mother and I were in a trolley with strangers, though everybody was cordial.
This PD started at the Jonesborough Visitor's Center. It was decorated with maybe a half-dozen Christmas trees. I liked this one the best because it was decorated with feathers and other natural objects. One was adorned with red hats, and others sported traditional trimmings. There were no trees glittering with food, and that is a crying shame. Where's the food tree? Here's a close up of a feather: I've misplaced my menu, so I can't go into great details about the PD. However, I remember that we had Spanikopita, cheese, and punch at the first house. And there was Vichyssoice at the second home. The entree was beef or chicken with mashed potatoes and possibly green beans. One of the best things offered to us was a cranberry orange sauce on the side; the bread was very good, too. The dessert I can't recall. It was a light layered cake with icing. Maybe tiramisu or something almondy? A lot of use I am. Would I take the PD again? Perhaps, if I could see the insides of different houses. The food was wonderful, but I haven't learned the caterer's identity. Yet. And, the entertainment was lovely as well. Carollers sang to us at one house and a bluegrass--or was it jazz?-- band played while we nibbled dessert.
